Maintaining Your Pillowcases: Care Tips for Different Fabrics

Pillowcases come in a variety of fabrics, each requiring specific care to ensure they stay clean, comfortable, and looking their best.  Whether you have linen, velvet, or corduroy pillowcases, following the right cleaning and care guidelines is essential.  Let's explore how to properly care for each type:

Linen

  • Washing

Wash linen pillowcases separately or with similar colors in cool or lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Avoid using hot water, which can cause the fabric to shrink.
You can machine wash on a gentle cycle or hand wash if preferred. Avoid using the washing machine's spin cycle, as this may result in excessive wrinkling.
Line dry or tumble dry on low heat. Avoid high heat, which can cause linen to become stiff or brittle over time.

  • Ironing
Linen pillowcases may require light ironing to maintain a crisp, smooth appearance. Iron on the lowest steam setting when the fabric is slightly damp.
For a relaxed, casual look, you can also hang the pillowcases to air dry and then simply fluff them before placing on the pillow.

  • Storing
Store clean, dry linen pillowcases in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing in direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time.
You can lightly mist the pillowcases with a fabric refresher spray before storing to keep them smelling fresh.
Velvet

Velvet is a luxurious, velvety-soft fabric that requires gentle care to maintain its plush texture and appearance. Follow these guidelines to properly clean and maintain your velvet pillowcases:

  • Washing
Wash velvet pillowcases separately or with similar colors in cool water using a mild detergent. Avoid using hot water, which can damage the fibers.
Hand wash or use the delicate cycle on your washing machine. Avoid agitating the fabric excessively, as this can cause pilling or distortion of the nap.
Skip the washing machine's spin cycle, as this can crush the pile of the velvet. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and lay the pillowcases flat to air dry.

  • Drying
Allow velvet pillowcases to air dry completely, preferably laying flat or hanging. Avoid using a clothes dryer, as the heat can cause the velvet to stiffen or become shiny.
Once fully dry, you can use a fabric steamer or iron on a low setting to restore the soft, luxurious texture. Be sure to place a thin cloth between the iron and the velvet.
  • Storage
Store clean, dry velvet pillowcases in a cool, dark place. Avoid folding, as this can create permanent creases.
You can also hang the pillowcases to maintain their shape.
Consider using acid-free tissue paper or muslin bags to prevent dust and discoloration during storage.

Corduroy
Corduroy is a textured, durable fabric made of thick, parallel ridges called wales. To keep your corduroy pillowcases looking their best, follow these washing and care guidelines:

  • Washing
Wash corduroy pillowcases separately or with similar colors in cool or lukewarm water. Use a mild detergent and avoid using hot water, which can cause the fabric to shrink.
Machine wash on a gentle cycle or hand wash if preferred. Avoid agitating the fabric too vigorously, as this can distort the corduroy ribs.
Do not use the washing machine's spin cycle, as this can crush the corduroy's raised wales. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and lay the pillowcases flat to air dry.
  • Drying
Allow corduroy pillowcases to air dry completely, either laying flat or hanging.        Avoid using a clothes dryer, as the heat can cause the fabric to become stiff and the wales to become distorted.
Once fully dry, you can lightly brush the corduroy with a soft-bristle garment brush to restore the nap and smooth out any flattened areas.
  • Storage
Store clean, dry corduroy pillowcases in a cool, dry place. Avoid folding, as this can create permanent creases in the fabric.
You can also hang the pillowcases to maintain their shape and texture.
Consider using acid-free tissue paper or muslin bags to prevent dust and discoloration during storage.
